Memory: Dr. Jack P. Cummins
Dr. Jack P. Cummins, 76, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away April 11, 2010 at his home and will be cremated. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, followed by a memorial service with military honors at 2:30 pm, Friday, April 16th, at the Park Lawn Northland Chapel, I-35 at 291 Highway, Liberty. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Three Rivers Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Jack was born June 9, 1933 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, the son of Floyd L. and Florence J. (Alley) Cummins. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers and a sister. On June 11, 1955, Jack married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Beverly Joyce Davis.
He attended Greenwood Elementary School and graduated from Lee’s Summit High School. Jack attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, Central Missouri State University, and Pacific Western University, where he earned a Ph.D. in School Administration. He was a member of Phi Kappa Delta Professional Fraternity and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Jack was a Kansas City, Missouri teacher and administrator for 33 years.
Jack was a Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He is a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Jack was a Boy Scout during his youth and a Scout leader his adult years. He was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and active in his sons’ scouting careers, proud of the fact they both earned their Eagle Scout rank. He worked with the Camp Fire Girls program, was a United Way Captain, volunteered with the Salvation Army and served as a board member of the Clay County Parks Commission. Jack was also the Director of the Gladstone Parks and Recreation Summer Program from 1968 to 1976. He was a Mason and served as Potentate of Ararat Shrine Temple in 1994.
Jack is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 54 years, Joyce; son and daughter-in-law, Kirk J. and Glenda Cummins of Liberty, Missouri; son, Kyle D. Cummins of Gladstone, Missouri; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy C. and Steve Wunderlich of Lakeland, Florida; granddaughters, Sarah, Jennifer, Amy, Laura, Katie and Anna; grandson, Andrew; great-grandsons, Paul, Jordon and Jake; and great-granddaughters, Gabriella and Madelynn Mae.
